Guitar for Dummies =D Empty Guitar for Dummies =D

Post by HanoHano Fri Dec 25, 2009 1:29 am

Hey guys, I'm just wondering who out here plays Guitar?

I got an Acoustic Guitar for Christmas. I hope to actually play decently eventually. So far, based on Online Guides, I can play D, G, A, and C. This isn't by memory of chord posiitions, mind you. :p

So, my main question is, what do you recommend for a beginning to do? Thanks everyone. ^_^

Practice, play easy songs, learn tabs and sheet music, practice, train your fingers, learn how to use a pick if necessary, practice, learn hand positioning, learn how the strings work in terms of harmonics and bends, practice, fool around with various chords, power chords, practice, don't give up, practice, practice, PRACTICE. I can NOT stress that enough. It's easily the most important advice I can give you.
It took me at least 48 hours of practice to remember five chords and 28 riffs, this being because I have extremely good memory when I want to and I play by ear. I stopped playing for a while and I'm even worse than I was previously; practice makes perfect.
As far as riffs go, I suggest simple ones, like "Smoke on the Water", "Come As You Are", "Iron Man", "Sunshine of Your Love", "Twist and Shout", "Hey There Delilah", "Wonderwall", etc. Those songs will teach you basics of guitars; "Smoke on the Water" is entirely power chords and picking; "Come As You Are" is a simple picking/power-chord melody (and was actually the first song I learned completely); "Iron Man" is entirely power chords, and it helps teach you about hand positioning; "Sunshine of Your Love" is a good transitional song between awkward chords and picking; "Twist and Shout" is a chord-only song that uses useful chords; "Hey There Delilah", although IMO a crappy song, is actually great for picking practice; and "Wonderwall" uses four incredibly generic chords that you can use for many songs, such as "Dream On", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", etc.
If you wish to transpose your own melodies, I suggest you learn the scale of the guitar. I used this one website for a tutorial but I forget where I found it. :/
As a side note: DON'T LEARN DRAGONFORCE SONGS. They're insanely fast, incredibly hard, and many people hate them anyway (seriously, though, they actually DO play that fast).

Hopefully this helps. If it doesn't, ask me for clarification or ask anyone else that can play guitar.
